Colleagues,
Our IT staff have often heard the complaints from our Faculty and Staff tha=
t
our computers are =93slow=94 and take forever to boot up=85..We have addres=
sed
with them the usual suspects that impact performance and startup time:
=B7 Security Software- Anti-Virus and related security software tha=
t
take up available resources and can slow boot time with initial scans.
=B7 System Age- we maintain roughly a four-year computer replacemen=
t
cycle, but software installations, upgrades, security patches, and general
daily use accumulate can degrade performance over time.
=B7 New software - tends to make more demands on memory and compute=
r
speed than old software.
=B7 Management Tools- used for remote access, software distributio=
n
and other IT related functions.
=B7 Viruses and Other Malware- can drastically impact performance
While we know that system performance can vary drastically, depending on
OS, memory and processor speed (our oldest systems are currently Optiplex
210L=92s-P4 3Ghz with 1-2 GB of RAM), Le Moyne College is looking to determ=
ine
what your institution might consider a =93typical=94 boot up time for your
standard campus configuration computers=85If you could answer the following=
it
would be greatly appreciated!!
1) Size of your campus
2) Campus computing replacement cycle duration
3) =93Standard=94 campus computer configuration
4) Approximate average boot time in minutes (from power on to usable
desktop)
We would like to find out where out computers stand compared to other
institutions and be able to tell our employees how ours stack up to other
institutions norms=85.
