I forgot to mention that Meru has a rogue AP feature that will =
triangulate the location of rogues for you.

We=E2=80=99re running Extricom radios and Cisco switches (installed in =
=E2=80=9906-=E2=80=9907) and, as of last summer, SafeConnect as our NAC =
(we were previously a Clean Access campus). We=E2=80=99re offering =
802.11b/g, with the hopes that N will be in our not-too-distant future. =
We installed APs in residents=E2=80=99 rooms (using the Ethernet jacks =
already available there).

=20

By far our biggest problem was interference caused by students=E2=80=99 =
personal wireless routers (and, to a lesser extent, wireless printers). =
We tried for years to have students configure their routers to operate =
on channel 11 (we use channels 1 and 6 for B and G), but by this school =
year there were nearly twice as many personal wireless routers as NAU =
APs. Our signal was simply being drowned out. So, working closely with =
our Residence Life department, we made the move last semester to ban =
personal wireless routers from our residence halls. This was a painful =
idea for lots of students who had grown accustomed to the perceived =
freedoms and benefits a personal wireless router granted them, but the =
ban has made for a night-and-day change for users=E2=80=99 ability to =
connect to our wireless network.

=20

We also (20/20 hindsight) didn=E2=80=99t initially install enough APs to =
provide adequate coverage. So we=E2=80=99re going back a second time and =
reinforcing almost all of our 21 residence halls.

=20

So those would be my two recommendations, from our experience: 1) get =
personal wireless routers out of your airspace; and 2) install your APs =
more densely than you think you need to right now.

We are adding wireless to our dorm space and I would like to know how =
other schools are running their wireless infrastructure in the dorms. =
Our dorms are the typical cinder block rooms stacked ontop of each =
other. We are a cisco shop and will be using the WISM and lightweight =
aps.=20

Are you running your system manually or is the controller doing a good =
job?

How dense is your ap deployment and what is the location of the ap (in =
the rooms or in the hallways)?

What feedback do you get from the users (good or bad)?

Thanks.
