We have been using Twitter (twitter.com/oithelpdesk) to post unscheduled se=
rvice outage information for a year or so now. These posts are done by ful=
l time Help Desk staff whenever a service outage is reported and confirmed =
for a service that is widely used. The posts simultaneously appear on the =
department web page (oit.nd.edu), the Help Desk Facebook page, and the camp=
us portal. Because many users follow us and configure for SMS notification=
, we try to limit the Twitter posts to service outages and status updates, =
or time sensitive notifications.

This has been working quite well and greatly reduced the time & effort prev=
iously required for email notifications and creation of static web pages. =
Often by the time we completed those tasks the problem was resolved.

Subject: Outage Notification Systems

We've been asked to investigate more real-time reporting of network outages=
or maintenance. Our VP has heard from some schools using Twitter or Faceb=
ook for such things. For those schools using these services: are your post=
ings to these services automated (if so how) or are you using fleshware to =
post? For others, what are you using that you find works well?

Steve
