At UIUC and on our regional network we use Intermapper for the most part. There is also a smattering of Nagios for certain things, but for network gear and protocols Intermapper has been in use here since as far back as I can remember (I got to town around 2000). While I was at NCSA we used Nagios for most WAN stuff and Intermapper and Nagios both for LAN. We had built a distributed Nagios setup throughout the country for the Teragrid, which worked pretty well after the initial pain of configuration and learning how to tune the remote sensors.
We still use pagers here, but have talked about getting rid of them many times. The one thing that comes up every time is coverage. How do folks deal with the basement/data center/poor coverage areas for cell/sms? There are plenty of places that have no coverage due to being underground or just on the fringe enough of coverage that we keep going back to pagers.
Also, how do other institutions handle billing? We don't get an issued cell phone anymore here and some folks aren't willing to use their personal phone and add a SMS plan (I have unlimited SMS so I don't really care, but some folks have 100-200 sms/month).
