I was wondering if there was any way that MIT could get TransArc (who I
believe owns AFS) to give permission to port AFS to linux.

It is my impression that the port would not be overly difficult (though
I don't have a good feel for a port of this size).

Given that MIT owns AFS and probably has the source lying around
somewhere, a port would not be unreasonable.

It would seem wise to have a licensing agreement (similar to the one set
up for Maple V) that stated that the software could not be used outside
of MIT, assuming this could be done.
