I just spoke with the Cambridge wiring inspector. He said you cannot
run any wire in a ventilation shaft, and that you only need a plenum
jacket when running in a plenum. A plenum is a positive air space,
such as the space inside walls when that space is used for forced-air
ventilation of a building. Since *very* few residences use plenums
(plena?), he said in general that you don't need to have a plenum
jacket in a residence in Cambridge, even when running in the walls.
You do need to seal all floor penetrations no matter what the jacket
is.
This was Cambridge, and my understanding of the inspector. Your
mileage may vary, so call the wiring inspector in your town if you're
actually thinking of doing this.
