slightly off-topic, but in the same realm:
At Dickinson, we 'strongly recommend' antivirus software for student PCs.
No way to enforce a requirement, as has been discussed... but we do have an
interesting 'reactive' (rather than proactive) policy:
When a student PC becomes infected and then turns around and tries to infect
other machines on the network, we block their IP... they then have to bring
the machine in to IT to be cleaned and PROVE to us that they have installed
current antivirus software set to 'autoupdate' before we unblock their IP.
If their machine becomes infected again, we refuse to help them, but we
still block their IP until they can again prove to us that their machine is
clean & updated.
here is the generic message we send to 'infected' students:
"Based on information received from our server anti-virus software, it is
apparent that your personal PC (IP # [172.16.x.x]) is infected with the
W32/(whatever) virus and attempted to compromise another of our servers. To
ensure the security of the campus network, we are forced to remove your PC
from the network. Please contact the Helpdesk once this virus has been
removed from your system AND you have installed anti-virus software (with
at least weekly updates). Thank you."
At least we can ensure that previously infected students have some
relatively recent AV software... whether they choose to buy it themselves,
or download/install a free one.
cheers,
becka
