Jeff Merriman <birdland@dagobah.Stanford.EDU> asks: Are any of you
currently charging for service in any way, or considering it? One-time or
monthly?
At Penn, ResNet has three services to each wall plate:
* Video - 55 channels including an in-house movie channel; no charge
* Data - Ethernet supporting IP and AppleTalk; no charge except for
purchase of Ethernet card or adaptor; free in-room software installation
on request (and we'll install the card, too, if requested)
* Phone - Charges apply for two options: common line shared with 0 to 3
suitemates; higher charge for private line
There is, implicitly, a higher charge for all residents of wired dorms,
whether any of the services are used, or not. This charge will be truly
invisible once all 7,100 beds are wired; presently about 3,500 are wired.
(As noted in an earlier query, we are considering charging for modem pool
access and/or blocking modem access from wired rooms. Thanks to those of
you who responded. I'll wait a few more days before posting a summary.)
Regards,
Dan
