Hi Karen,
*1. What tool(s) are you using? If you are using separate tools for
Windows and non-Windows hardware, what are the benefits/challenges of using
multiple tools?*
We are using IBM's BigFix. It's an amazing product. Our central campus is
also using Casper to do Mac imaging and some remote management since it's a
bit more feature rich, but everything is also manageable via BigFix. The
main advantage of Casper is that it's a much more seamless integration with
Mac OS X, with a Self Service feature that looks much like the App Store
that lets you install pre-built software packages without admin rights.
That saves us technician time.
BigFix also has a Self Service feature but people often stated that it
doesn't integrate as nicely (mostly doesn't look as pretty) into Mac OS X.
On Windows, it works perfectly fine and we have several applications we
deploy through Self Service.
*2. What do you use the tool(s) for?*
Patching primarily. We also use it for any software deployments, running
reports, generating scripts (e.g. updating a host file). The ability to
get any information we want from the client is important to us, and BigFix
Relevance language lets us do just that.
*3. Within your organization, where does usage/ownership/management of
your tool fall? What resources (people, skill sets, time, etc.) is needed
to use/manage the tool?*
Central IT manages everything. However, they delegate access to department
IT such as myself in BigFix so I have full control over my machines.
Casper does not have a good enough delegation system so I don't have any
access to that system, but as I mentioned I can still do anything I want on
Macs in BigFix.
*5. How do you manage similar services for "other" systems? For example,
we don't expect to manage student-owned machines, but there are elements of
software inventory/metering that we still need to track.*
For student's personally owned machines, we do nothing. I know other
universities use some sort of clean access client for NAC, but it goes
against Berkeley's philosophy to force installation of software on personal
devices.
We don't have anything for MDM (for managing things like staff iPhones,
etc.) but I believe central IT is considering a few options in that area.
For general inventory purposes, we just track it in an inventory database
with serial number, etc. That requires manual input.
*6. Do you have any documentation, web pages, and/or other resources that
you're willing to share? For example, your tool requirements list, RFP,
selection process, communication strategies, related governance/policies,
etc.*
I don't have anything that's publicly accessible, but I'm more than happy
to answer any additional questions you might have.
*7. Any lessons learned that you can share?*
I'm a huge fan of automation. Any tool you look at will help with that.
I'm partial to BigFix since I've been using it for many years across
different organizations. But SCCM and KACE have similar feature sets.
One of the biggest wins for us is the ability for self service installation
of software. By investing a bit of engineering resources into packaging
applications first, you can save tons of technician time later by allowing
folks to install these apps on their own without administrative rights.
If you have any questions, let me know. I love BigFix and am happy to
share more.
