1. What tool(s) are you using? If you are using separate tools for
Windows and non-Windows hardware, what are the benefits/challenges of using
multiple tools?
Windows - SCCM
Mac - JAMF=E2=80=99s Casper Suite
Mobile Devices - AirWatch
2. What do you use the tool(s) for?
OS Image deployment
Software Deployment
Security compliance
Reporting
OS & Application patching
3. Within your organization, where does usage/ownership/management of your
tool fall? What resources (people, skill sets, time, etc.) is needed to
use/manage the tool?
Tool management is handled by the Platforms group. There are four people
that manage all of our desktop management tools and offerings and the
infrastructure along with providing 3rd level support.
The four of us all came into it with software packaging experience, really
only two of us make packages for deployment along with the OS imaging, one
for Apple, one for Windows. One primarily handles the updates, security
compliance and custom reporting, though field staff can create their own
reports, Microsoft just made it a little more difficult in CM 2012. We can
all backup and cover for the others we just have our specialties. Not our
only responsibilities but takes 50-80% of our time.
5. How do you manage similar services for "other" systems? For example,
we don't expect to manage student-owned machines, but there are elements of
software inventory/metering that we still need to track.
We don't use the software metering in SCCM, for license compliance where
needed we use KeyAccess.
6. Do you have any documentation, web pages, and/or other resources that
you're willing to share? For example, your tool requirements list, RFP,
selection process, communication strategies, related governance/policies,
etc.
Mobile Device Management - http://mobile.nd.edu/projects/mdm/
Sorry any Casper and SCCM pages are behind secure logins.
7. Any lessons learned that you can share?
Enable everything up front, it was easier to initially conffigure it than
it has been to go back and turn on and and implement additional features.
If you are needing to managed devices off campus that only reach in via
occasional VPN connections or the web turn on SSL for SCCM.
Getting the users of un-managed systems to install the client can be a
headache. They see no point to it and some see it as big brother watching.
We used the Software Center as an incentive and published all the same
software we have our software downloads self service page. So it is easier
for them to install software, now it is select and click install, not
download, run installer, answer questions, close installer, delete download=
.
Look into 3rd party software patch products. You can do it yourself but it
can easily take a full time person to manage depending on what 3rd party
(non Microsoft or Apple) software you want to deploy patches for. We are
currently looking to implement this still in process of selecting the
vendor.
Depending on your contract with Microsoft you may find SCCM to be free or
very cheap, I believe we only had to pay for the server license and SQL
license in earlier versions, we have change our contract and now only pay
for media if needed.
