We use a variety of products here at UC Santa Cruz.
For our interior doors in Housing facilities we use Onity, which is not
networked but is fairly inexpensive. They are mag-stripe readers with
PIN pads.
For places where you want something a little more sophisticated but not
super expensive we have been using OmniLocks from Stanley. They use the
Zigbee wireless protocol so you have to install special access points
for them. Their tech support was not great for a while but their 3.x
software seems to be better. We recently tested the Persona wireless
locks from Assa Abloy which use 802.11 and they integrated with our
CCure system. The concerns about most wireless lock products are that
you can't generally wake them up and lock (or unlock) quickly.
For our exterior doors on Housing facilities, our main library, our
newest science building and a few other locations we use CCure, which is
a wired system that is very full featured.
There is a trade show in Las Vegas this week called ISC West where you
can learn all about this kind of stuff. There is a similar show in NYC
in November.
