1. Hosting a session is a great way to start conversations. Once you=
present your topic plenty of people will give feedback, offer their point =
of view, encourage you, and build collaboration. Most of us will agree tha=
t these conversations are what makes conferences valuable. If you haven't =
seen anyone starting conversations on your topic, the best way to do that i=
s to start it yourself. You don't have to know everything or have infinit=
e success. You can even just host a structured discussion (for example... =
"How to attract students to workshops" or "What to replace workshops with s=
ince they are dead"). By the way... I'd love to see these.
2. Having a proposal accepted offers more security that your employer=
will send you to the conference. It offers the employer bragging rights, =
prestige, and Universities are all about prestige! They like to show off t=
he fact that you did a presentation or gave a lecture. Also, remember that=
we are at Purdue. All you small colleges (like mine) like to be able to s=
ay that their IT staff gave presentations at Purdue. Trust me, it works.
3. It gives you bragging rights too. This is just another thing you =
can put on your resume or CV or LinkedIn profile. Most performance evaluat=
ions have a section for "professional development" and attending a conferen=
ce, sharing your experience, and starting conversations satisfies that cate=
gory nicely.
4. It builds connections for future conversations. I have Resnet peo=
ple on LinkedIn, Facebook, and email contacts so if I run into something, I=
know I can get some input from them. They say that business is about conn=
ections... giving a presentations or leading a discussion hands them to you=
on a magnetic cobalt alloy platter.... I mean silver.
5. Because what you get out of this conference is determined by what =
you put in. The sessions are the main event at this conference, so withou=
t your proposals it just wouldn't be the same!
The deadline for submission is April 13th! Submit today!
