Rich,
The SAIT help desk offers a backup service for students as a separate charg=
e. Typically if a student just wants a backup we charge them $30 and if the=
y want their computer reformatted and backed up we charge $50. We usually o=
nly promise to maintain their data for two weeks, although we do make excep=
tions sometimes if the student asks.
We used to maintain redundancy through a RAID enclosure to guarantee studen=
t data, but we now are moving towards a network based storage solution.
Hope this helps. If you have any more questions feel free to contact me off=
list. (Andrew.letson@mso.umt.edu)
Thanks,

Subject: Help Desk Backups?
Just wondering what you all do at your institutions in regard to client bac=
kups. So to clarify. If I go to the Apple Store or Best Buy, they will as=
k me if I backed up my files. They will tell me that it is my responsibili=
ty to backup my files and they will not help me with it.
Currently at my institution we take on the responsibility of backing up the=
user's files when they bring the computer in for service. I have a proced=
ure in place that my staff have to verify with the user to make sure we bac=
ked up all of their data. This is not fool proof as sometimes the staff me=
mber forgets to ask the user to verify, but also sometimes the user is not =
thorough in verifying and then they get mad at us.
Just wondering if any of you do the same or have moved more toward the Appl=
e and Best Buy model.
If you have moved, how have your clients responded?
Any of you thinking of moving?
Especially in this cloud era I am thinking it might be better to spend time=
educating users about saving their files on the cloud and empowering them =
rather than having them rely on us to keep their data safe in a false sense=
of security. Especially considering that their Hard Drive can die at any =
moment and all of their precious data would be gone forever.
Thanks in advance
Rich
