Honestly we can accomplish most of this with our inventory management
platform, KACE. Since machines can check-in from off campus I can put
machines on a map showing their location based on their IP address. This
isn't a feature of KACE but with access to the database and a little
ColdFusion work it was rather simple to pull together. Remote scripting
ability makes it easy to display alerts on the system or disable access if
need be. As long as the system has a network connection I can do almost
anything to it remotely (queue evil cackling).
The requirements for login sound like two factor authentication which is
something that could be setup independently.
As others have mentioned, we don't invest in particular anti-theft
software. In my eight years at Dickinson only two laptops have gone missing
from what I recall. The money we would have spent on anti-theft software
would have cost much more than just replacing the systems. Fortunately
neither of these systems had sensitive data so that wasn't a concern. We
have had discussions around encrypting hard drives and that is a more
likely direction for us, especially with it being included in MacOS and
with some functionality baked into Windows.
