RESNET folks,
I just wanted to update you all on RESNET '94 planning:
First off, the call for registration has not gone out yet. So don't worry if
you think you might have missed something. We are waiting to hear back from
vendors concerning event sponsorship, then we'll finalize the symposium budget
and calculate the registration fee. We hope to send out the call for
registration by mid April.
RESNET '94 will happen July 10th, 11th and 12th at Stanford University.
Attendees will stay in Roble Hall, which is wired for both ethernet and
phonenet.
There will be three different types of sessions:
Case Studies - A Residential networking project is described in detail
(45 minutes with 10 minutes for questions)
Focus Discussion - Group discussion of issues underlying a particular topic
of interest.
Topic Presentation - Two or three presentations on a particular topic of
interest and how issues are being addressed or considered.
Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
Physical plant Activation equipment
Printing services Software services
Support issues Funding models
Video services Security
Privacy and ethics Network management
Leasing programs Residential programming
Computer Clusters Policy issues
A "Call for Speaker Participation" and a "Call for Vendor Participation went
out a couple of weeks ago. The speaker information was sent out to this
mailing list and the vendor information was mailed to a select group of vendors
who have a presence in the San Francisco Bay Area, and who we felt were
appropriate for the focus of the symposium. Vendors are being asked to attend
an afternoon-long vendor showcase and to help sponsor the symposium. The due
date for both the call for speaker and vendor participation is April 15th.
Each of the calls for participation included the RESNET '94 mission statement:
"In support of academic excellence, and to provide richer living and
learning environments, colleges and universities throughout the country are
paving the way for the "Information Superhighway" to reach students where they
live. The ResNet Symposium is designed to bring together those who plan,
implement, and support residential information technologies, such as in-room
networking, residence-based computer clusters and video technologies. Many
aspects of such services will be addressed through case studies, topic
presentations, focus group discussions, and vendor participation."
We recently hired a half-time RESNET '94 coordinator. Her name is Jean Wood,
and she has a great deal of experience with event planning and working in the
computing industry. Jean begins work next week (March 28th), so we hope to
become more responsive to all your questions real soon now.
