First, I'd like to welcome fourteen new people to the ResNet-Forum mailing
list. Naomi Schmidt, our gracious host at MIT, yesterday added the names
of the people who signed up for this mailing list in St. Louis last week.
St. Louis? Yes, there was yet another session (actually two!) on Residence
Hall Computing held, this time, at the ACM SIGUCCS Management Symposium
which was held Wednesday through Friday of last week.
The first of the two sessions was facilitated by Joe Germuska and Ann
Stunden of Northwestern, and myself. (The other session was by Dan
Updegrove of Penn, but I'll let him or someone else summarize his
presentation.) Joe, Ann, and I did little more than give a bit of
background on the status of the residential computing programs at our
respective schools and get the ball rolling with some starter questions and
issues.
The group, which numbered about 25 overall, quickly tossed out a number of
issues to discuss. We spent time on (in no order) printing and print
accounting, baselines for connectivity, IP application suites for Mac and
DOS, student usage policies, charge-back mechanisms, wiring specs and
standards, how voice and video fit into the package, and levels of software
service. Other topics were addressed, but the in retrospect, we were
basically reiterating the topic list for ResNet '94 Symposium that Stanford
is hosting.
