Hi everyone! I think that I will stop being a lurker and speak up about the
latest two threads on the list:
1) The Farallon ad: it was a mistake. Please let's stop talking about how
evil it is/was and continue talking about residence networking.
2) Full Internet access: I think that full Internet access for everyone is
"a good thing." As several people have mentioned, it allows the students to
be information providers as well as consumers. This is especially important
since the quantity of original information on the Internet seems to be at a
standstill. Not only will it allow the students to get access to the
ideals, opinions and knowledge of a more diverse community, but it will
also allow them to express their ideals, opinions, and knowledge with the
rest of the world.
After all, most people in college _are_ over 18 so treat them as adults and
let them be responsible for their own words and actions.
Finally, my my two cents on security. I think you should put more resources
into education and awareness rather than buying the newest, most high-tech,
packet-scrambling hubs. No amount of technology in the local phone closet
is going to keep students from sharing passwords or keep some bad guy half
way around the world from erasing the hard disk of an unprotected machine.
