I am new to this list, and as I have not received any mail
addressed to it yet to get a feel for what is being discussed, I thought
perhaps I would ask who is out there and what is being done.
Let me start with what is going on here at Oregon State. We are
currently working with a local Cable TV company to wire Cable, Telephone,
and level 5 10baseT ethernet into each Residence Hall room. We are
approximately 1/3 of the way through the wiring and my job is to
make a computer network out of that. We currently charge students $3 a
month for the connection and I am just now gearing up to lease/sell them
ethernet cards. I only have about 50 nodes currently connected and am at
a very infantile stage in building the network.
What I would like to know is what sort of networking is going
on (or being tought about) at other University Residence Hall systems and what
sort of services are being offered.
