At Syrcuse, we are in the middle of a pilot project for networking the
halls...
Like Oberlin, our clusters limit access to local hosts. Students have access
to the wider Internet through timesharing accounts....but direct access from
lab machines is restricted because we do not currently have any authentication
procedure in place (we are in the process of building in a system whereby
any student sitting down to any lab machine has an account on a campus
server as part of an authentication system....a benefit of
that will be that we can then broaden the Internet access from the computer
labs...because we would be able then to identify any individual as well as
machine).
Our network connections in the halls, though, work like stations in our
offices....the students have direct connections to the Internet (telnet,
ftp, Mosaic, etc). Their ethernet cards are registered and they are
assigned IP addresses. We are going to put "smart hubs" in the halls that
will not allow any connection except the one that is registered.
This is going to be an administrative headache I think, at least until we
can get a system into place...but, we also think
it's necessary to worry about the security issues...starting with
authentication. We feel it's necessary to be able to track down problems
to the individual causing them. With luck, we'll have no problems to track!
But, we want to be able to do so.
The students who have the connections also understand their liability...if
others use their machines, the students are responsible for what happens on
the machines they own.
