I posted a similar query to several news groups, and the general conclusion
was that most people allow unrestricted access from the dorms. For
security, they do one of three possibilites: software (for example,
Kerberos), hardware (hubs that munge packets), or nothing (warn users about
ethernets).
We have all our dorms going on line soon and will allow unrestricted access,
with little security (warning users).
We have already had a student ask if they can create a bulletin board service
containing Internet information. Don't quite know how to handle that one!
