Hi, everyone:
Bish Sanyal, Professor of Urban Studies and Planning will be our guest
speaker on Monday. He will be addressing the *history of faculty* in the
decision-making process at MIT along with how the relationship between
students and faculty has evolved over time.
Our discussion topic will be *Educational Technology*, and the Senior
Associate Dean and Director of the Office of Educational Innovation and
Technology, Vijay Kumar will be our guest expert. The background for the
discussion is given below. Please note that these are only guidelines and
are meant to get you thinking about the topic at hand. Also, MITCET is an
Institute Committee to which the UA nominates an undergraduate
representative.
Let me know if you have any questions--the agenda will be out this evening
before 7:30pm.
-------
The Provost has asked the MIT Council on Educational Technology (MITCET) to
address opportunities to integrate online and other technology-enabled tool=
s
into the residential campus and classroom experience with the focus on
improving the learning of our students. As part of our investigation, we
would like to hear from students their thoughts about what MIT could be lik=
e
if our residentially based education changed to more thoroughly integrate
information and communication tools. The high-level framing questions are:
- *What opportunities are there for significant change in the delivery o=
f
MIT education?*
- ***Can you envision ways in which the MIT educational experience at MI=
T
could be very different for students and faculty?*
- ***What values of MIT=92s culture could be strengthened through the
changes you foresee? What risks should be avoided?*
In order to get students' perspectives around these questions we would like
to ask and discuss student responses to more specific questions (not in
order) such as:
- What kind of technologies are MIT students generally using?
- How are you using mobile devices now and how do you think you would b=
e
in the future? Are there University applications you would like to see?
- Do you think your major has an impact on the kind of
computing/technology skills that you have or need?
- Has technology (computers, software applications, Stellar, other tools=
)
helped you with our classes, learning.? If yes, how? If not why not?
- What are the major advantages you see of using technology your
classes/ for your courses/disadvantage?
- If there was one thing your professors could do using technology what
would it be?
- If there was one thing your professors would not do using technology
what would it be?
--------
Thanks,
Jont=E9 Craighead
