Matlab 6.1 will become the Athena default version as of the next AFS
propagation tonight. From the message announcing this to users:
Matlab 6.1.0 is now the Athena default. To run the prior 5.3.1 release
now, type:
add matlab
matlab -ver 5.3.1
The old 4.2 release is also still around and can be run in analogous manner.
These versions will be kept at least through the Fall, 2001 semester.
6.0.0 is still around, but we are discouraging its use and expect to delete
it in the next few weeks- please use the new 6.1.0 default version instead
of 6.0.0.
You can read about new features by typing "whatsnew" at the Matlab prompt.
In configuring this new default, we have reverted to the practice we
used in 6.0.0 of not making the Desktop launch by default- instead we
are launching the traditional interface with Java enabled (as per
Mathworks' "-nodesktop" command-line switch). This represents a
reconfiguration from our initial 6.1.0 installation a few weeks ago,
which did launch the Desktop by default. This was done because a
majority of our users have expressed a preference for the traditional
interface- you can easily launch the Desktop if you want, either by
using the "-desktop" command-line option, or by typing "desktop" after
Matlab is started.
Let us know if you encounter significant problems or bugs by writing to
