I have installed version 6.0.1 of the Splus statistics package on
Athena and made it the default. From my announcement message to users:
The default Splus version on Athena has been updated to 6.0.1 for all
platforms. There is a new, Java-based GUI in this release that
can be run by typing:
add splus
splus -g &
The Java GUI uses a large amount of memory and the vendor advises at
least 256 meg of memory to run it- if you have less, it may run
erratically or not at all- symptoms include: the GUI does not launch
at all, and you are returned to the athena prompt, or- the GUI opens
but the window is not filled in, or filled only partially.
If you attempt to use the GUI on machines with less memory than 256 meg, be
sure to close all other applications before you try to launch it.
To find out how much memory the machine you are logged in on has, type:
athinfo `hostname` memory
at the athena prompt.
There is also a new Java-based help system, which can be accessed by
typing "help.start()" at the > prompt.
To run the older 5.1 release now type:
add splus
splus -ver 5.1
We plan to delete the transitional 6.0 Sun and Linux versions shortly, so
please transition to the default 6.0.1 release as soon as possible if you
have been using that version.
