One of the Barracudas arrived two days ago and the other four arrived
today, along with five 50/68-pin adaptors. Unfortunately, the
adaptors are female-female, and we need male-male.
jhawk had some difficulty finding the correct male-male part, so as a
hedge, I called The Mate Company and had them fax me two separate
quotes. The first is for five High-Density 68 Male to 50 Male "Super
thin, unterminated" adaptors (SM-025), .33" high by 2.8" wide by 1.19"
long. The second is for five of the same thing, but "Unterminated,
offset connectors on vertical adaptor" (SM-039); dimensions are not
given but it uses a vertical offset, so I it's higher but probably not
as long. The SM-039 is about $15; the SM-025 is about $20. So we can
put in an order for five of one or five of the other on Monday if we
can't figure anything else out.
(If anyone is going to comment on the lack of termination, please
consider that these are 68-pin disks being connected to a 50-pin bus,
not the other way around. The disks won't care, according to
mycroft.)
We also visted CompUSA, which didn't have what we want, and phoned
Micro Center, which carries something that might plausibly be what we
want but didn't have it in stock. I might try E.L.I. and/or PCs For
Everyone over the weekend.
So much for having disk issues resolved by July 25.
I'm going to put the enclosures and new disks in the machine room.
