I spoke with Seagate tech support yesterday and today, and they concur
that the large number of defects on the medalist pro's we received is
cause for returning the disks. They suggested I go through NECX, but
otherwise they would do it.
At this point I believe the wiser strategy is to replace them
with 9.1gb wide barracuda disks (ST19171W). Greg is OK with this,
as was some hurried zephyr discussion.
Unfortunately, because the present narrow enclosures were received
in early May, and that upgrading to wide enclosures may run us into
the limit of the present purchase order, I elected to go with
50/68pin internal adapters.
That is, placing the wide disks in the present narrow enclosures. While
this means we cannot use them in a wide configuration:
1. We can always do so later by purchasing new enclosures. Since
we originally decided that wide was not necessary, this
does not seem horrible.
2. We don't have to worry about procuring new SCSI cabling.
3. I don't think that the esp SCSI controller supports wide
SCSI anyhow.
Steve from the MCC (presumably <sdfranks@mit.edu>) is handling
cancellation of the backordered medalist pros, and the ordering of the
Barracudas and 50/68pin adapters.
I'm on the phone with NECX to get an RMA for the 4 disks.
I think that's about it. The MIT req# assocaited with this morass
is 01073220, the NECX order number is 194720077. The person I dealt
with at Seagate (+1 405 936 1200, x1) was Ricki Reynolds.
