Okay, I just did some research on this for news. I propose buying
five 9GB Barracuda disks from NECX and using one as a spare. The
disks would be backed by a three-year warranty. Each disk would cost
us $750.54, each single-disk enclosure (Kingston) would cost us
$108.44, and each cable (Adaptec) would cost us $32.80, for a total of
$4458.90.
If people are uncomfortable about 9GB disks, then 4GB disks are only
$517.69. But with disks as cheap as they are, I'd like the boost in
cell space.
We could also go through ADS, but I'm not convinced that the advance
replacement guarantee is any better than keeping a spare. The price
is certainly a lot higher.
