Let me add some important points to Grace's email.
Quoting from a document written by Matt Cain, Grace and Sherri among others
entitled Freshmen Room Retaining Policy,
"Students would also like to suggest an alternative to the current policy,
which would guarantee that freshmen can stay in the residence hall to which
they are assigned over the summer, but that they must go through an
internal room assignment process within that residence hall after arriving
on campus, at the end of the Orientation week."
Please note that this means freshmen may elect to stay in the residence
hall to which they are first assigned and not be required to move to
another hall.
Furthermore, this document stated some important goals shared by students
and administration:
1."Ensuring that the freshmen are comfortable during Orientation as well as
the rest of the year.
2. Ensuring that the freshmen feel welcome and accepted by the student
community.
3. Providing all undergraduates with a happy and healthy living environment."
Two others were added:
4. Ensuring that the freshmen have a positive experience during the
housing and room assignment process.
5. That freshmen are treated fairly in the process and are assigned rooms
throughout the residence hall."
Furthermore, it was made clear by me that this new process is to be an
experiment which we will evaluate in early October 2002, we being members
of RLSLP, DormCon and Cho. The evaluation will be based on the 5
principles noted above and will involve input from the freshmen, from the
current residents, from the house government and from the housemasters as
well as the RACs and staff in RLSLP.
I believe that Matt will be putting this document on the DormCon website soon.
