Wally, what you said about parents needing someone to lash out at so
they can live with themselves makes a lot of sense. It was a very
touching post.
I mean, I agree with you that I'm sure many people see the Shin
parents' pressuring as a probably contributor, and I'm sure that
that's a horrible thought to them. Assuming their actions are at
least in part a form of guilt displacement or something, I think this
is precisely the sort of situation that therapy is for. I'm sure
it's hard to deal with those feelings of pain and guilt and anger...
Therapy wouldn't be a magical solution (as is obvious in this case),
but I'm sure it'd help a lot in situations like this, perhaps helping
parents to deal with their feelings in a way that doesn't hurt
others. Alas, I would imagine that the Shin parents would quite
likely be the last people to go see therapy.
*sigh* What's my point? I guess it's that MIT is on the right track
when it tries to publicize therapy, and that I wish there were more
efforts to promote it in the world at large.
