what wally said really touched me, and made a lot of sense. i'd
like to piggyback on it.
in my life i have lost two people i loved very much in drunk driving
crashes. in both cases they were not the ones who had been drinking.
and in both cases our families have sued. the primary goal in those
suits was to change policy and prevent similar crashes in the future.
i think the shins are motivated at least in part by the desire to
prevent suicides at MIT and at colleges across the country. they
believe very strongly that having parents involved will save lives.
personally, i disagree. but it's a debate. and it might be a
debate worth having.
the sad thing is that this debate won't happen, at least not in a
court of law. because MIT can't afford, monetarily or politically,
to take it to that level. i would be impressed and surprised if they
stood behind the privacy law. but i think they'll settle out of
court, which will only confuse the debate.
