Re: Passover seders...

Well, I had a nice long talk with my parents last night, and suggested
the following compromise. They didn't love the idea, but with a few
adjustments, they accepted it.
The second-night seder will start around 6:45; by the time we get to
the meal it will be after 8:16 (which is when Shabbat is over). So
up to that point, we'll participate in the singing, the reading of
the hagaddah, etc. but we won't make any of the brachot that would
be invalid (e.g., kiddush or "al achilat maror").
When the meal begins, we'll slip off to the dinette and light candles,
and then we'll repeat the seder up to the meal, taking advantage of
our knowledge of what sections of maggid are not absolutely necessary.
That should take about ten minutes, tops.
Then we rejoin everyone for the rest of the evening.
We'll leave the kashrut issue for next year. :-)
Thanks for all the supportive messages, both here and in email.
