Heather and I have such different expectations and needs from a Passover seder than my parents, but we don't want to cause problems -- either by not going home or by insisting that my parents change the way they've done things for ever. But that means that we end up compromising just about everything, and compromising ourselves. The seders will be early, the Sabbath will be desecrated, the dishes will be chometzdik, and we will be unhappy. But what else can we do? "Mom, Dad, we love you and we'd love to spend the holiday with you but we believe that participating in your seders involves too many transgressions and we don't want to suffer karet, even for the sake of shalom bayit." Yeah, right. [Karet = "cutting off" of the soul, "Shalom bayit" = "Peace of the house", or family harmony.]
