you might also want to experiment with different lengths of sleep; when
you sleep, you go through a cycle (deep sleep, REM sleep, etc), and
there's a point in that cycle that's best to wake up at. (where "best"
means you're most wide awake when you wake up) obviously you shouldn't
be really short on sleep when you try this; but i've found that 7 hours
sometimes helps more than 8, because i'm at the right point in my sleep
cycle.
