Get a pager.  If someone wants you, they can call you any time,
wherever you are, even if your phone is tied up by a talkative
roommate.  If you recognize the return #, you call them, as quickly as
you feel is needed.  If they're clueful, they'll put a code on it like
'911' for emergencies, '411' if they just want info, etc.

And it's just handy to be pagable.  Examples: when planning to meet
someone and something goes wrong.  When you go to the store and as
soon as you leave your roommate remembers something else that should
be on the list.

And you could make an interface to your computer to recognize
important incoming email and page you about it...

But, it _is_ another leash to the outside world, though there's always
'Oh, sorry, my batteries died' or 'Oh, that must have been when I was
in my faraday cage'.
