I found this vastly amusing, even though it is true - to think of the
telephone as the #2 option :-)
Having two housemates, and especially since one of them just got engaged and
is thus on the phone even more than before (which was pretty significant), I
like call-waiting because she can know that someone is trying to call me.
Usually what will happen is that someone will "beep in", she'll ask them if I
can call them back, then she'll wrap up her conversation quickly. (Because
she already feels guilty about hogging the phone :-) It's not ideal
etiquette-wise, I'm sure, but it helps me from getting frustrated attitudes
when I'm expecting a call and have no idea about whether the person is punting
me or just can't get thru.
