The other reason why it happens is that at some level, people *expect* other strangers to screw them --- or at the very least, they're not surprised when it happens and they try to protect themselves against it. It's very painful when someone you know and trust, and to whom you've learned to let down your guard, does something to hurt you, since you're not expecting it.
