From a realisitc viewpoint, it makes sense. How can you hurt people you don't know? It's not that easy. But if you know someone well, then you know quite well the best ways to hurt that person should you ever decide to do so. So, it's not all that surprising that people hurt who they're closest to. Not good, but not surprising.
