eichin:	"Bridge? Folk dancing?
Ah the things people do to get each other's attention..."

You forgot sparring. There's nothing quite like hitting each other over
the head for social interaction. :-)

------
As for those groups within SIPB, people mentioned:

Hacking (roof and tunnel), MIT GSP, NERO, bridge, MUD, Assassin,
and {folk,ballroom} dancing.

Since I've joined SIPB, I haven't been actively involved in any such
groups (which is quite depressing in itself). (OK, so I occasionally
dabble as an outsider or retired old-timer, but that's all.)

Then there are the computer-based special-interest groups, which very much
belong in the SIPB: perl, PostScript, X ("slightly fanatic people who do X"),
NeXT, course 6 in general, and (the biggie) Athena.

In SIPB, the latter group (computer activities) are just fine, while the
former group (social activities) doesn't particularly belong. I get flamed
much more for discussing computers away from here than for discussing
bridge (or whatever) around the SIPB. Odd, that...

Oh, there's one more social activity that's crept into the SIPB office.
This is one of which I'm definitely guilty. RPGs (Role-Playing Games - other
than Assassin). The amount of spontaneous RPG discussion (especially GURPS)
I've heard around the office in the past month has far exceeded what I've
seen/heard in years anywhere except Random (290-2nd floor) and the
Gamemaster, a game store that specializes in such games. Is this an
Institute-wide trend or is it only SIPB which is experiencing a surge
in RPG activity?

Enough rambling. My obligatory closing depressing thought:

I don't think I've ever felt (or been able to feel) home sick before, but
I'm beginning to feel that way about Athena, and I still have my account...
