why is Japanimation always so depressing?

Yesterday, while i waiting for my laundry, i started watching my Robotech
tapes again -- the series is really cool, but it does the same thing that
all Japanimation I've seen does (granted, that quantity is small): it has
sad endings. Robotech, Laputa, Akira.... all really stunning films, but
they all have sad endings. Sigh. So i was left all day yesterday in this
really strange mind-frotzed mood... (so maybe i'm a romantic or something)
