I remember a friend of mine who lost his hand when a pipe bomb exploded
in his garage. (I burned my finger at work last week.)
I remember giving a ride to a hitchhiker whose car was broken and he
needed to get to Boston for his methodone treatment. (I once gave up
caffeine but I'm back on it again.)
A friend of mine whose wife left him after twenty years of marriage
visited me this week. He didn't talk about it. He just sat in my
living room and looked pathetic. (I almost got married, but it was
broken off a month before the wedding.)
I remember a friend of mine who lost one of her eyes in an auto
accident. (I hit a curb at 20 mph a couple of weeks ago.)
Several friends of mine are having trouble finding jobs because they
don't have degrees. (People I work with often don't listen to my ideas
because I don't have a Ph.D.)
A friend of mine was homeless for several years and lived by begging
money from people in Harvard Square. (My house is a mess and a lot of
things need fixing.)
(So why am I unhappy?)
