After living here, and spending a summer in Israel, I decided that the
only way to really live as a traditional Jew is to live in a society
where that is the norm, and the society revolves around that.  

(Incoming misintepretable comment...) If there were a sequence of
Christian holidays right now like we have, the academic calendar in
this country would start in October.  This is not to say this is bad,
but there's no good solution.  MIT's policy is a good one, but the
problem still remains:  Rhu can't miss 4 classes and still expect to
have any chance to make the work up.  You can't make up discussion
very easily.  When the final comes along, can Rhu claim he was away
for Rosh Hashana/Yom Kuppur/Sukkot/Simchat Torah?  No.
