Although I'm not sure that 27 months was quite enough time to wait for
possible objections to the proposed patch, I decided to throw caution
to the winds and actually replace the production websterds on charon
and yaz-pistachio with a version incorporating the patch. With the old
version, the client's behavior for number was

  % webster number
The webster servers have failed to answer the request to look up your word.
This could be because the webster server is down, or because your word is
too long and the server can't find it. Try looking up "tree" -- if that
works, then you've probably misspelled your word. If it fails, then send
mail to bug-sipb@ATHENA.MIT.EDU to let the SIPB know that the servers are
  broken.

and with the new version, the output began with

  Cross references:
    1. sum
  1. num.ber \'n*m-b*r\ n [ME nombre, fr. OF, fr. L numerus - more at NIMBLE]
     1a1: a sum of units : TOTAL 1a2: COMPLEMENT
