MH's default scan format is only 4 characters wide, so it
does not know how to format 5-digit message numbers when you
run scan.
To get around this problem, I would recommend packing your
inbox. This will re-number the messages so that there are
no gaps in the sequence of numbers. You can either select
"Pack Folder" from exmh's "More..." flist menu, or run the
command "folder +inbox -pack" from the athena% prompt.
Note that after you pack your inbox, you'll want to rescan it.
("Rescan folder" is also an entry in the "More" menu.)
Rescanning the 1,000 messages in my own inbox takes roughly
30 seconds, so I imagine that 10,000 would take longer.
Be patient, you only have to do this once.
If you don't want to pack your inbox, the only other
solution would be to define a custom scan format. This is
complicated enough that all I'll do is point you at the
documentation you'll need to understand if you want to do this:
You'll want to read the manpages for "scan" and "mh-format",
and look at the file /usr/athena/etc/scan.default .
