Our version uses a different font path that notices fonts installed in
the sipb locker but not in /usr/athena/lib/tex/fonts, doesn't it?

You could replace the binaries with a script that makes the appropriate
changes in the TEXFONTS environment variable, then calls the athena dvi2ps.
