I can sympathize with James Busby's Midland Lament. I grew up in El Paso
(now THAT's west Texas) and drove through Midland twice a year to visit
my grandparents in Dallas. (Midland, by the way, got its name since it was
half way between El Paso and Ft. Worth. About 250 miles from each.) Except
for Odessa, Midland is alone in the desert with no town of significant
size within 120 miles.

But I feel that this is wonderful opportunity for APO and I am sending this
note to the entire list because there are probably other such opportunities
around the country. There are over 300,000 people in Midland and Ector
counties, surely someone can benefit from the services of Alpha Phi Omega.
UT Permian Basin may be new but there have to be some students looking to
volunteer to help others.

Earlier this year, I pointed out that a third of APO chapters no longer
exist. Several responses were along the lines of "not every college should
have a chapter just to have a chapter." This is not the case.

If we are interested in extending service to all those in need and extending
opportunities to all those who want to wish to serve, I feel we need to make
an effort in remote areas like Midland to establish chapters.
