I would see the need for them to withdraw from any chapter office. As I mentioned prior regarding the OA youth officers. The sectional/regional/national youth officers still remain active members of their lodge, but they ARE required to withdraw from any chapter office.

I have to agree here. Electing an active, student member to the national
board should not necessitate that member to move to alumni or inactive
(or even associate) status. As a matter of fact, maintaining active
status should be a requirement to hold the position! Requiring a student
member to withdraw from active status defeats the whole point of getting
active representation on the national board.

Also, to clarify, I think what we're seeking is 'active member
representation' and not merely 'student representation' on the national
board of directors. We should be seeking the perspective of the students
that actively participate and take part in the activities of our
chapters. If we were just looking for student representation on the
board, I think we've probably already had that in the past - as various
members of the past boards may have gone back to school for either
graduate school, second degrees, additional certifications, or whatever.

One thing that I am concerned about with active members on the Board, is
the term of office. As the average lifespan of an active member in our
Fraternity is only around 2 years, is a 2 year term of office too long
for them? If someone spends 4 years in college, then they are serving on
the Board for 1/2 of their college career!!!! This is quite a long time
commitment, even for some of the most dedicated students.

It may also help to spread the leadership experience by electing the
student members to a one year term. Regional members to a student
advisory committee could be elected every year (either at regionals or
national convention), and each year, this student advisory committee
would elect one of its members to sit on the board for the following
year. Or the national convention could elect two active members to sit
on the board over the next two years: elect one for the immediate year,
and then elect a successor to take office one year from then.
