Brother Robert Banks was a Chemist who worked for Phillips Petroleum. With
his co-worker John Hogan, he is considered the inventor of Polypropylene
(PP). This is one of the most commonly used plastics in the world and whose
first widespread use was in Hula-hoops. Banks and Hogan are also responsible
for development of a Catalyst making production of High Density Polyethylene
(HDPE) more inexpensive. HDPE is represented in Plastic recycling by a "2"
in the recycling triangle. PP is represented in Plastic recycling by a "5"
in the recycling triangle.
He is a member of the National Inventors Hall of Fame.
