Hello

My name is Bill Kuhfal. I have been an advisor to Gamma Kappa(TCU) for =
22
years. I am also an advisor to Gamma Rho(UNT) and Alpha Omicron(SMU).

One of the main aspect I feel as an advisor is that ability to be =
objective.
An advisor MUST be outside that chapter. If a person has been part of =
that
chapter and people will remember this person more as an active than an
advisor. People may say "oh that just Joe sounding off" and may not give
that advisor the proper respect.

I also feel a good advisor is someone who has some seasoning to outside =
the
campus life as well. Recent grads and students must have time to look at
their lifes first. Too many times I have seen members come up to me =
saying
the only way they can continue with APO is being an advisor.

Another factor is APO can not be one of the top priorities in that =
person
life. Too many times I have seen young advisors doing too much with =
chapters
to that point of acting more like an active than an advisor.

Should age be a factor. I became an advisor at the age of 24. People =
mature
at many speeds. To say 23 is the right age, for some yes, for some no. I
feel experience is more a key and that persons abilites to help a =
chapter
not for the short run but for the long should be more of the =
concideration.
The MAIN item is what does that advisor bring to that chapter.

In ending, I would like to say that being an advisor to me means one of =
the
highest honors in APO. A group of students ask a person who is outside =
their
chapter to help them, to be there for advise when needed, and not to =
when it
is not needed. Of the three chapters that I am currently advising, I =
never
asked or sought to be an advisor. Each of the chapters asked me if I =
would
accept being an advisor.

Yours in Leadership, Friendship and Service,

Bill Kuhfal
Chair of the advisory committee-Gamma Rho
advisor- Gamma Kappa

advisor- Alpha Omicron
