I was a voting delegate in 1998 when this issue came up and was voted on.
Changing the song then was defeated. While I can understand that some women
will be uncomfortable with the song as written, think about this:
If the song is changed, the goal of having one song for all of us to sing
will not be fulfilled.
Why would I make this statement? Simply put, those Chapters singing an
alternate versions now will start singing the "new and improved" official
version, while those Chapters that did not want the change will continue to
sing the old version.
So we end up with the flip-flop effect -- we just change which group sings
the incorrect version. No outcome is going to satisfy everyone in the
Fraternity.
Here is my radical suggestion: Have the toast song as part of our history,
but don't sing it anymore. That way no one is bothered by changes, gender
referrals, or grammar mistakes.
The amount of time that this Fraternity has spent debating this issue could
have been better spent on more important issues, such as membership
retention.
