Subject: Re: Keeping the Vise on the Work Table

++ for vicki's most recent email

Chiming in as the existing-in-some-space-between-active-and-cruft person
here with some attempt at a solution:

Would it be possible to relocate the vise to the silkscreening room? If I
recall the tables there are of sturdy constitution and an appropriate
height. I'm not sure how frequently the vise is needed but if it's on the
order of a few times a year perhaps the walk wouldn't be too inconvenient.

Not a solution. Needs to be close to the presses. Been discussed
this round, four years ago, and further into the past.

Concerning the pencil sharpener, I think it could be serviced and
   reinstalled elsewhere in the office.

If the tall worktable goes, the pencil sharpener can go elsewhere.

I agree that the paper cutter is in disrepair and given its handiness is
worth keeping. However, it is my opinion that unlike the vise, for which
height is a safety concern, perhaps the height of the paper cutter is not
as imperative an issue? If so maybe it could be placed elsewhere in the
   room?

I find standing the best way to accurately use this kind of paper
cutter. Particularly for hundreds of cuts.

If others don't agree, it could be relocated elsewhere. Easy enough
for me to move it to the tall worktable/bench when I use it.

The office is a bit crowded right now and I think getting rid of the
worktable could go a long way.

The front APOffice is an empty dessert right now. It use to have one
less couch, five more desks, two more small tables (now none), a total
of seven metal storage cabinets (three more than it had up a few weeks
ago, two tall book cases, two more filing cabinets, another frig
(actually, two coke machines & one frig), ...

Of course, what matters is the actives' current preference for using
the space that SWE doesn't have. I'm just pointing out, it's not
being used as densely as it has been in the past, when the average
number of actives was higher.

We could also try getting a different workbench?

As already discussed, the current vise on the current worktable/bench
is at the edge of being adequate for the tasks it's needed for.

   The problem with the
current one is that its legs don't allow for much storage beneath it.
Currently there's like one bin underneath it which is why it seems like it
takes up space that could be used for other purposes. A different
workbench could allow for continued use of the surface on top while also
allowing for more effective overall use of the space.

   Ciao,

   ~nay-nay

Not true. Currently 80% to 95% of the volume under the tall work
table/bench is full of AX stuff: a book shelf full of books, and the
comic book collection. That's as high a % as any other table AX has
stuff under. Higher than the desk. And much higher than any of the
couches, which are at 0%. (The first couches AX got (some years after
we moved into W20-415) were up on legs. The dexion was kept under
one, misc. stuff under the other. (They were both as long as the
current coffee table.))

Not clear if there are plans to get rid of any of the stuff under the
tall worktable/bench. Quite possible that space could hold other AX
stuff. There are items under the large table that could fit under the
tall worktable/bench.

AX might want to keep it's eye out for couches on legs.
