Minutes of ServComm Meeting, January 17, 2000

Administrative notes:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Start: 7:12 pm; End: 7:43 pm Present: Sam, Katherine, Carolyn, Jake
W., Ann Marie, Laura, Ian, Ping Huang, David McIlroy, Alan, Ellen
Interchaper Activities:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
SVP (Sam): I contacted BU. We'll try to have a project with them.
       Currently suggestions include a river cleanup. Another idea is
       to have a joint Chapter Weekend II with WPI.

MVP (Ann Marie): Initiation is currently set for CWII. Do we think
       it's a good idea to have another chapter present during Initia-
       tion? Also, it's a week before the last full week of classes, which
       is a big exam week.

Carolyn: Perhaps we can have some people coming for just the night
       of Initiation?

Ann Marie: Maybe we can do CWI with WPI.

SVP (Sam): CWI is at Camp Knobscott.

Ping: It's closer to here than Camp Resolute.

It is decided that Initiation remain at Chapter Weekend II, and to have
WPI with us at Chapter Weekend I. Sam will contact them soon.

Service Requirements:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
SVP (Sam): We should formulate a ServComm recommendation for
       service requirements.
MVP (Ann Marie): The idea we had from Afterfinals is that brothers
       would need 6 projects for a total of 20 hours, while pledges would
       do 5 projects for perhaps 15 hours.
Carolyn: Approximating would probably be a good thing.
MVP  (Ann  Marie):  The time requirement for pledges is only a
       maybe, since it would be good for them to meet five different
       sets of brothers at five different projects, whereas satisfying the
       15 hour requirement could be done all at a big project such as
       Big Screw.
Carolyn: We could use the 15 hours as a goal for the pledges, rather
       than a requirement.
It is decided that we should treat the time requirement as an experi-
ment, and have it for the brothers only for now to see how it pans out.
There will be no time goal or requirement for the pledges this term.
Service Outside the Chapter:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
SVP (Sam): We should probably give brothers credit for service out-
       side of APO, such as one-on-one tutoring, but we would like to
       remain a fraternity serving together. How about an allowance
       of one project or three hours of service outside the chapter?

Carolyn: People should generally not take advantage of it. It might,
       however, come up for brothers who feel that they should be
       counted as inactive, but have done service outside APO.

MVP (Ann Marie): Perhaps towards the end of term, we should
       send an e-mail that asks brothers feeling like they fall short on
       projects to talk to the MVP.

It is so decided.

Open Projects:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Sam calls for ideas on open projects. Suggestions offered include:
   o Food Bank
   o Painting project
   o Construction
   o Destruction
   o CWI projects (caveat: that may cause more pledges than we can
     handle)
   o Registration Day
   o Habitat for Humanity
Project Chair Scramble:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
David McIlroy volunteers to be the head PC of Big Screw. The pledges
will probably PC Chapter Weekend II, and CWI does not yet have a
PC.

SVP (Sam): E-mail will be sent out to recruit for PC-ships.
